Interact Proud to Support Support4SDR Wales

Following the AGM it was agreed that Interact would like to make a charitable donation to Support4SDR Wales.

The Cause

Support 4 SDR Wales has been established to provide support and advice to families who are considering or whose children have undergone SDR surgery.  Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy or SDR is neurosurgery carried out to remove spasticity in patients with certain types of cerebral palsy.  Patients are primarily children, but adults have also undergone this surgery. Currently SDR is not commissioned routinely in the UK.

How Donations are Spent

Support 4 SDR Wales have no employees at present. The founder Trustees are volunteer parents. They intend that almost all of the money raised through donations and events will provide packages of funding to help families with the costs of therapy and equipment needed to build strength and control both before and after SDR.

Why

Interact have had the pleasure of being hosted by Mr Chris Heaton-Harris MP at our House of Commons luncheon for the past few years and he has educated us about this great cause and talk so passionately about his involvement in it and it was felt by the Chairman at the AGM and the National Committee that we would like to support in the form of a donation. Chris constantly raises the problems surrounding the very emotional subject of Stillbirth in Parliament and is active in trying to get "selective dorsal rhizotomy" (SDR) routinely commissioned by the National Health Service (and NICE).  Through simple changes with the NHS they will be able to offer a brighter future to children affected by cerebral palsy and comfort to their parents.
